What is Eczema ?

Eczema is also known as atopic dermatitis or Atopic Dermatitis (the most common type of eczema). Atopic Eczema affects especially children, but it can continue into adulthood or later in life. The word eczema comes from the Greek word Ekzein meaning "out to cook"; The Greek word EK means 'out', while the Greek word Zema means cooking.

Eczema is a chronic skin disease that is cracked and dry in the itchy skin, irritated. All skin-related GP visited in Western Europe lead about 30% to a diagnosis of atopic eczema. It affects both men and women alike, as well as people from different ethnic backgrounds. Most GPs (General practitioners, general practitioners) in Western Europe, North America and Australia say the number of people who each year with eczema is diagnosed has in recent years increases.

Atopy is the hereditary predisposition to the development of some hypersensitivity reactions such as hay fever, asthma, chronic urticaria and some types of eczema. Atopic Eczema, therefore means that a form of eczema is in other words, eczema inherited by Atopia.

Approximately 80% of cases start atopic dermatitis developed 5 years ago, and a large number of it during their first year of life.
